Updated: Aug 20, 2021

We are into the month of valentine. As every lovely couples are planning for many stuffs to make their beloved one feel special. Do anyone know the history about Valentine’s Day celebration? It’s really awful to look into history of valentine. Check out my blog to gain knowledge about it.

Actually the method of celebrating valentine was first carried out in the year 496. This was first adopted from Roman Festival where people in Roman has the habit of celebrating “Lupercalia (purification of city from evil spirits; welcoming spring; and ensures fertility for all the woman.” This festival was celebrated annually in the mid of February (13th to 15th). Lupercal is derived from a Latin word meaning “Female Wolf.”

The name valentine is shared by two different people (a priest or a saint and a bishop) who had been the major reason for Valentine’s Day celebration. During third century in Rome, the emperor Claudius II issued an open notice stating or inviting the youngsters to join the army and fight against the defense. But most of the youngsters and married men refused to accept the invite as they were not ready to lose their lives. Their attachment with family and loved one stopped them from accepting the offer.

This news reaches the emperor Claudius II, which made him feel helpless. After multiple discussion he decided to declare a new rule: No one must fall in love and get married to anyone. Officially married papers of youngsters are declared as legally not valid. He also added the punishment details: if anyone go against this law will be punished by throwing stones towards them until they die and beheading them in-front of people.

This dreadful act created fear among all the people and in turn increases the count of people (youngsters) joining the army to fight against defense. Though the law was passed for maintaining healthy army still it affects the feelings of people. So saint Valentine stand against the law and supported the youngsters to get married with their love in illegal way.

This illegal thing slowly reaches the emperor Claudius II, he decided to imprison the saint Valentine. The saint Valentine was imprisoned by the jailer head Asterius. The jailer Asterius was heartless person who doesn’t show pity towards the prisoner. He had a blind daughter name “Julia.” The jailer had heard about the special power of saint valentine who could cure certain problems of people by God’s grace.

So he had a conversation with the saint and explained him about the problem of her daughter’s blindness. The saint using his power helped out Julia to get vision. This made jailer and his daughter to be loyal towards saint. In addition to that Asterius, in awe of valentine’s power converted to Christianity along with 46 members of his family.

As the days passed Julia and Valentine fall in love with each other. This love story brought into emperor's notice, so he decided to kill Valentine on 14th February 269 AD as per law norms. Before his brutal death he was allowed to write a final note. He wrote a letter to young woman Julia describing about the current situation and concluded the letter with a sign “FROM YOUR VALENTINE.” This was the note followed by people these days in all greeting cards and gifts.

Before the final note of Valentine reaches Julia, he was beheaded in front of the people. This brutal death of Valentine is been celebrated as “Valentine’s Day” till now.

Though Valentine’s Day is been celebrated as peak of happiness by couples these days, but it holds pain of saint “Valentine” and every single individuals who truly fought for love.

This blog helps everyone to be loyal and be trustworthy towards the person they are in love with. HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY:)
